The ailing invader.

T he nature of biological invasions prompts researchers to focus on questions of great importance: How far will a nonnative species go? How fast? And what are the consequences to native species? To crops? To us? This perspective had crystallized long before Charles Elton wrote his classic treatise on the subject in 1958 (1). In it, Elton noted that scientific accounts of invasion have ‘‘a sense...

Energy Dependence Systematics of Strange and Multi-strange Particle Production

We present results on systematic measurements of strange and multi-strange particles with the STAR detector for center of mass energies per nucleon pair ( √ sNN ) of 62.4 and 200 GeV in ultra-relativistic Au+Au collisions at RHIC. We use these results to characterize the chemical and kinetic freeze-out properties of the fireball produced by the collision. This is done by comparison to statistic...

Strange and Multi-Strange Particle Production in ALICE

The production of strange and multi-strange hadrons in proton-proton (pp) and lead-lead (Pb-Pb) collisions is studied with the ALICE experiment at the CERN LHC. These particles are reconstructed via their weak decay topologies, exploiting the tracking and particle identification capabilities of ALICE. Measurements of central rapidity yields of Λ, Ξ− and Ω− baryons, their antiparticles and KS me...

How strange a non-strange heavy baryon?

We give some general arguments in favor of the large magnitude of matrix elements of an operator associated with nonvalence quarks in heavy hadrons. We estimate matrix element 1 2mΛb 〈Λb|s̄s|Λb〉 ≃ 1 ÷ 2 for Λb baryon whose valence content is b, u, d quarks. This magnitude corresponds to a noticeable contribution of the strange quark into the heavy baryon mass 1 2mΛb 〈Λb|mss̄s|Λb〉 ≃ 200 ÷ 300MeV ....

Oncogenic osteomalacia: strange tumours in strange places.

Two patients presented with hypophosphataemic osteomalacia and were subsequently found to have small tumours unusual histopathology and location causing the osteomalacia. Each tumour was found after an intensive search for occult masses. Studies of vitamin D metabolism and renal tubular function before and after surgery yielded further insight into the pathophysiology of oncogenic osteomalacia....
